[in the car on my cell phone so no caps :/ sorry]

laydon groaned in agony as he threw his bookbag onto the passenger seat of his sleek dark blue volkswagon beetle, Jacky. he started it up playing the bug's name sake, Dark Blue by Jack's Mannequin, hoping the music would distract him. it didn't. he wound his way out of the small parking lot so he could make it to Webs on time.
even though they lived in la jolla farms, the more upscale part of town he still worked. he did for luxery money and because, well, he liked it.
as he drove down to the main street where the coffee shop was, he still couldnt get *her* out of his mind. there were so many questions he wanted to ask herg, likce if she felt the attraction between them. there was so much he wanted to learn about her as well. but he knew all that was never going to happen. ethan was his best friend and he respected him too much to try.
he drove down the street hoping for a parking spo7t and found one byx alfonzos. so he walked a little bit before reaching the shop, looking for a nice chat with Kirk to cheer him up.
webs had a few customer sitting around, mostly college students working. laydon figured more would come in a bit from the high school and catholic school.
he went behind the counter and punched in; as he put on his apron the scruffy manager walked out of his office.
"ah, percival." he smiled, eyes twinkling. "i thought i smelt a dog walk in."

2. Evan

Laydon, Ethan, and the other rwo whipped their heads around to see who Monica was talking about. As Laydon saw, sure enough it was the girl from the park. She stood there with her long red hair pulled up into a tight ponytail, but besides that she looked the same she had in the park; a brown sweatshirt with the words "Adelphi University" printed in gold and loose fitting jeans tucked into calf-hi white Chucks.

Mr. Doyle cleared his throat to call the class to attention, but it seemed that the whole class was already starring at the mysterious girl. The guys were starring with looks of desire, and the girls with jealousy. "Class," Mr. Doyle said loudly trying to get them to look at him, a few people's eyes looked over at him, and he knew he was at a loss. "This is my neice, Evan." Finally, Laydon thought, I have a name for her. "Her aunt put her and her brother under my wing, so they will be joining us in a few days time."

Evan looked around the classroom, a fake smile on her face when she saw Laydon. She raised an eyebrow and a true smile broke out on her perfect face. Everyone in the class turned to see who she was looking at, but she had already turned away. "Thank you for letting me come today, Uncle." The class noticed, as Laydon had, how exquisite her voice was.

"I thought you'd like to meet my facorite class," he replied. "After all some are like you.. GO ahead and mingle." he smiled before stage whispering, "Make a few friends." The class laughed lightly.

Evan looked uncomfortable, being put on the spot. She glanced around the class; as her gaze fell upon a couple of tables the guys shifted, welcoming her. But she ignored them, looking. And then she started walking towards Laydon's table.

Laydon heard Ethan's breath catch and he saw the girl roll their eyes. As he watched her he noticed the peircing green of her eyes, unable to know how he missed them before. She pulled out the last chair at their table and sat down, crossing her legs. "Hello," she said, smiling softly, waiting for someone to day something. No, daring someone to sat something.

Jessy was the one to accept it. "Hi," she said smiling. "I'm Jessy. It's nice to meet you." She held out her hand.

Evan took it. "You too. It's nice here."

Ethan snorted. "Right." The entire table looked at him, Evan taken aback. "Ah, fu--I mean, uh, it's not that exciting, so..."

"Well I used to live in a big city," Evan shrugged, "So I like it calmer."

"Little La Jolla," Monica said. "The only problem is the price. I'm Monica." She smiled but didn't offer her hand.

Evan didn't find it odd, just smiling. "Hi," she said.

"Uh," Haley said, who was being rather quiet. "I'm Haley, and I hear you've already met our buddy Laydon here," she kicked his chair.

Laydon looked at Haley quickly, glaring slightly, before running a hand through his hair, smiling embarassingly. "Yeah," he said.

"I remember," Evan said smiling still. "This morning, wasn't it?"

"Don't tell Jocelyn that," Haley mumbled before going back to her sketching.

"So," J-dog said chanigng the subject, "Mr. Doyle is your uncle?"

"Yup," Evan shrugged, leaning back in her chair. She looked sideways at Laydon's sketch before he closed his book. "My brother and I were sent here, like he sort of said, by our aunt. Dick's taken us in."

"What about your patents?" Monni asked.

"My mum, and dad died a long time ago. Along with my other brother, Andrew, and sister Chloe." She said it normally, nonchalantly. Laydon already knew her parents were gone, but not her brother and sister.

"Oh my God," Monica said.

"I'm so sorry," Jessy added, eyes wide, sorry.

"It's okay," She looked uncomfortable again. "I'm not looking for pity."

"But still," Ethan said quietly. "It's still a shock."

"Yeah," Evan said, not really paying much attention anymore. She was watching Laydon.

He was oddly quiet, sitting there, book closed and not speaking, just staring of. He was thinking. By the way Ethan was acting, nervous and anxious, Laydon knew that he actially liked her; not a one-night like Ethan was known for. But Laydon still felt like there was some pull, some tug, some song, pulling himself, not Ethan to her. But they were all right; he did have Jocelyn. Even if she was a psycho hose-beast like they'd say from Wayne's World. And he did want Ethan to actually have a relationship...

Then Laydon noticed they were all staring at him. "Huh?" he asked.

"I asked if you were going to the football game tonight," Haley asked, annoyed. "Last one and all."

"Oh," Laydon said nodding. "Yeah. I got to go watch Ethan play his heart out. Or just stand on the sideline."

"Oh really?" Evan laughed and looked at Ethan, an eyebrow raised.

"He's joking," Ethan said pointedly. "Right bro?" He looked at Laydon sternly.

"Totally," Laydon said as the girls started laughing.

Star Star Star

[I wish our computer was in the living room so I could watch tv while I type]

When Laydon got to school it was only a few minutes til lunch whi was well because he had stopped by a taco bell and starbucks on his way home. The attendence desk lady just rolled her eyes when she saw him. In his fourth peiod he just slid into his desk next to his best firend, Ethan. Lucky for him the teacher had just told everyone to clean up.

Ethan turned to him and said "Where were you? Jocelyn looked ready to kill me when I said I had no idea." Jocelyn was Laydon's girlfriend, that he completely forgot about with the girl in the park.

"Sorry, dude," Laydon answered. "I slept badly then went to the park to get my mind off of it." He shrugged.

"Oh?" Ethan raised an eyebrow. "On one hand, go to school to see people who love him and save his best friend from impending doo; but on the other hadn a park. Which would he choose." He gave Laydon the look.

"Both," Laydon answered. "I'm here aren't I?"

"True." Ethan paused for the bell to ring. "But only because grams would kick your ass if you didn't."

They walked out of the classroom, heading toward their designated lunch table, chatting about what Laydon had missed out on earlier that day.

"I'm gonna go get lunch, you want?" Ethan asked Laydon as they thru their bags on the table.

"Nah," Laydon said holding up the taco bell bag. "Hey Tyler," he said to his friends, "J." He hugged one of the girls, Jessy. His other friends were by him, sitting down, acting out a scene from Monty Python or kicking around an orange. He sat down unwrapping his food about to take a bite of the still warm crap in a shell when his phone vibrated. Setting it down he checked his phone. Suprised it was from Ethan. May day! Incoming! Code Jo, it read. Laydon looked up to see Ethan waving his hands in the air while percautiously balancing a tower of food. However the intent of his message was in front of him. Laydon's girlfriend, Jocelyn, waas coming his way.

She was a good enough looking girl, with soft brown eyes and tightly curled hair. She was however, a slight nerd, wearing glasses, in every advanced class, a tutor, and more. But that wasn't why Ethan and his other friends made such a big deal about her. When Laydon first started hanging out with her she had been really nice, and they got along well, but when he asked her "out" she got a little over protective. And then Ethan started teasing her like an older brother. Things spiraled out of control from there.

"Hey, Lay," she said to him before giving him a quick kiss. "Didn't catch you earlier."

They both sat down. "Grams needed help packing," Laydon shrugged. His grandmother was packing up all of his grandfathers things for Laydon's aunts.

"Oh," Jocelyn said stiffly. "That's cool."

Throughout lunch Jocelyn fought to keep Laydon's attention, chatting about God doesn't even know what, but Laydon, being the gentlemen he is just nodded and smiled with her. However when the bell rang he was glad to be going to art with Ethan and Haley and Jessy and Monica instead of lunch with Jocelyn.

As they walked their seperate ways Ethan looked over his shoulder to check that Jocelyn was out of earshot. When he saw he was he asked his question, "Why'd you lie to her?"

"Huh?" Laydon wasn't paying attention.

"Why didn't you tell her what happened this morning?" Ethan explained.

"Oh," Laydon said shuffling his feet as they walked into class. "I don't know, really. I just felt like she would make this huge deal out of it if she knew I was ditching again. I had been stopping."

As they sat down Jessy asked, "What happened?"

"I slept badly," Laydon said honestly. He knew he could trust them along with Ethan. "And then I went to the park afterwards, just to think."

"Okay," Jess said dropping it.

Monica kind of looked around but didn't say anything.

"If it was anybody but Jocelyn I'd have to kick your ass," Haley smiled showing her teeth.

"Hey, hey," Jessy objected to the cursing. "None of that."

Then the late bell rang and Mr. Doyle started talking about shading and light and things Laydon already new about. So instead of listening his mind wandered back to the park. To the pale girl with fire hair. She hadn't given him her name.

"Alright," Mr. Doyle said calling Laydon's attention back to him. "Knowing what you know now, knowing what you knew then," he smiled quoting Nightmare Before Christmas making Monica smile, "I would like you to draw a portrait. I don't care how well it is, just how you take this person, how you imagine them to be, how you decipher them. I don't care if it is their real apppearance or the monster they really are onr the inner beauty that shines through them, just a portrait of how you see them." He waved his hand then added, "Sketches, people. I don't want any paintings, markers or what not, just sketches. And....go!"

As Laydon took out his black sketch book he said to Ethan, "So I met this girl at the park." He said it nonchalantly. The girls looked over at him when he said it and exchanged smiles. Laydon knew they just wanted him and Jo to break up.

"Oh really," his voice got high, mocking Laydon. "Who was she?" He actually sounded like the Strange man pointing in Meaning of Life at the Find the Fish part.

"New chick that just moved here," Laydon said trying to be cool about it. Then Monica caught his eye. "Sorry, I mean girl. She was gorgeous."

"Really?" They all almost said at the same time.

"More than Natalie Portman and Juliet Simms," Laydon said dreamily.

"Shi--dang, man," Ethan said laughing. "That amazing?"

"You don't even know," Laydon said outlining his drawing.

Ethan didn't say anything nor did any of the girls. As they drew Laydon worked his best to make his portrait look as perfect as she had when he saw her. Of course he was drawing the girl from the park. And it wasn't long before Ethan said something.

"Woah. If the girl from the park looks anything like that I'll date her." Ethan smiled widely, tugging on his football jersey.

"Haha," Laydon said. "She didn't seem to date."

"Someone not interested in you, love?" Haley asked. "But, hey, what are you trying for you've got Jocelyn, right J-dog?" She nudged Jessy.

"Yeah, let us not forget about the lovely Jocelyn," She laughed at her nickname.

"You know who that drawing looks like?" Monni asked.

"Who?" They all starred at her.

"Some anime girl?" Ethan teased.

"Nao," Monica scowled. "The girl who's chatting with Mr. Doyle." She pointed to the Teacher's desk.
